Les Three 6 Mafia réaliseront d'innombrables albums sous plusieurs noms. Représentant Memphis, les six membres du groupe, Crunchy Black, Gangsta Boo, Lord Infamous, Koopsta Knicca, Juicy "J", DJ Paul, développent et entretiennent une image relativement négative. Three 6 Mafia propose dans son rap des sujets tel que l'usage de de la drogue, la violence, l'agressivité, le sexe, la pornographie et tout autres sujets pouvant donner une image négative. De plus, la formation cinématographique des leaders du groupe, Juicy "J" et DJ Paul vient parfaitement renforcer le côté théâtral de ce groupe que beaucoup appelle le Wu-Tang Clan du sud. Le point commun entre ces deux groupes réside dans la volonté gérer les productions en interne, la participation unique des rappeurs du groupe, et la gestion en parallèle des carrières solo des membres. Après avoir publié leur premier album officiel en 1995 et leur premier album sur un gros label en 1997, Three 6 Mafia s'est rapidement retrouvés sur les rives de la gloire lorsque que "When The Smoke Clears" a débuté à la sixième place du Billboard Album Chart en été de l'année 2000.
