Nas vient d'un secteur difficile appelé "Queensbridge" dont d'autres artistes ont pu "s'extrairent" tel que Marley Marl, MC Shan ou Intelligent Hoodlum. Nas s'est fait son nom et sa réputation comme étant un rappeur habile grâce à l'excellent "Illmatic" sortit en 1994 suivit en 1996 de son second opus "It Was Written". Nasir Jones a été très influencé par son père qui était un joueur de Jazz, commence à rapper à l'âge de neuf ans et joue dans un groupe sans prétention nommé Devastatin' Seven dans le milieu des années mille neuf cents quatre-vingt. Il rencontre le producteur de Main Source en la personne de Large Professor en 1989, lors de la séance d'enregistrement de sa première "démon tape". Large Professor le présente à toute son équipe, et l'amène à faire ses débuts sur Main Source en 1991 sur la collection Breaking Atoms entant que guest sur "Live At The Barbecue", où il prend part aux ch�urs aux côtés de Large Professor et de Akinyele. Bien que sa contribution fut largement salué par la critique, il n'a pas réussi à construire sur ces bonnes fondations, sa vie part un peu en vrille à ce moment là et il se retrouve déstabilisé par le décès de son meilleur ami et par la fusillade dans laquelle fut impliqué son frère. Il faudra attendre 1994 pour voir sortir son premier album solo "The Illmatic" avec la contribution de la crème des producteurs de New York : DJ Premier (du groupe Gang Starr), Pete Rock et Q-Tip (du groupe A Tribe Called Quest) et bien sur Large Professor. Une équipe solide pour Columbia Records qui se voyait tout heureux de leur nouvelle "acquisition" et qui voyait en as leur acte prioritaire dans la rap musique pour l'année 1994. Nas qui venait de laisser tomber son préfixe "Nasty" était maintenant bien aiguisé dans un style tout à la fois percutant et flamboyant. Le succès commercial a suivi Nas lors de la sortie de son deuxième album "It Was Written" qui a directement débuté à la première place du Billboard des albums en juillet 1996. En 1997, il a collaboré avec Foxy Brown, AZ et Dr. Dre sur le projet d'un "super groupe" appelé The Firm. Bien qu'il ait démontré des signes comme quoi il se trouvait dans une impasse créative, l'album "I Am...", qui a, par ailleurs, révélé son nouvel "alias" (Nas Escobar), n'a paradoxalement démontré aucun signe d'une diminution de sa côte de popularité commerciale puisque cet album entra à la première place des charts US en avril 1999. Le niveau de qualité descendra d'une manière encore plus alarmante sur l'album suivant, publié en novembre de cette même année 1999, et ne rencontra pas de bonnes critiques, qui se voulaient plutôt unanime pour "descendre" ce quatrième opus : "Nastradamus". En 2001, une série d'incidents vont émailler le parcours de Nas, entrant une baisse dans la carrière du rappeur. La vie privé de Nas est troublé. Sa mère commence à souffrir d'un cancert et sa femme le trahit. Pour compliquer le tout son ennemi de toujours, Jay-Z, le critiquait ouvertement à travers de nouveaux "diss" tout en assurant un album acclamé par une grande majorité, "The Blueprint". Nas se devait donc de réagir, afin de faire oublier les différents affronts dont il avait fait l'objet. C'est donc en décembre qu'il sort son opus "Stillmatic" référence à son premier album de légende. Courant 2002, Nas nous propose un EP intitulé "From Illmatic to Stillmatic : The Remixes". Mais c'est surtout son album "God's Son" qui fut attendu. Moins attendu "The Lost Tapes" sort la même année.
