Certains menbres sont originaires du quartier Bronx de New York, mais le groupe est né à Staten Island (New York - USA ). Les membres du Wu Tang sont tous des amis d'enfance et d' autres sont des cousins, comme RZA et GZA et ODB. Au départ , il y avait RZA, GZA et ODB qui avaient formé un groupe de rap appelé 'All In Together Now'. Ensuite Ghostface Killah est venu rejoindre le groupe. Le dernier recru du groupe est Cappadonna. RZA a le rôle de producteur exécutif, voir de leader du groupe. Le contrat que les membres du Wu ont signé entre eux stipule que chaque membre peut aussi sortir ses albums solo avec une autre maison de production autre que Wu Records. Il y a par exemple Method Man qui est avec Dej Jam Records. Si Method Man chante par exemple avec Redman, cela ne veut pas dire que Redman fait partie du Wu Tang. Bien qu' étant un groupe, chacun d' entre eux appartient également à une maison de production autre que leur propre studio d' enrregistrement ( The 36th Chamber ). The Genius appartient à Geffen Records, Method Man est chez Def Jam Records et Ol' Dirty Bastard avec Elektra Records.
